Is it riba?

Is paying in advance for crops (salam) halal?

The Prophet allowed paying ahead for a known measure, a known weight and a known date. Salam is the exception that lets a farmer be paid before the harvest. Its conditions keep it from becoming a loan or a gamble: the whole price now, produce clearly described and normally available, a fixed date, and no tie to one particular field.

People also ask

Can I pay half now and half at delivery?

No. In a prepaid sale the whole price must be paid before you part, otherwise both sides are debts. The OIC Fiqh Academy, following the Maliki school, tolerates payment within two or three days.

Can I buy the harvest of a specific farm in advance?

No. If that farm’s harvest fails you have paid for nothing. Describe the produce by kind, quality and amount instead, without naming one field.

Is salam allowed for animals or for gold?

Hanafis do not allow salam in animals; the other schools do. Gold and currency for money must always be on the spot.

Can I pay in wheat now for barley later?

No. Wheat and barley are both sold by measure, so they must change hands together. Pay with money instead.
